When the days are long, the sun is bright, and the wind is warm.
So much happens in one year - it's impossible to remember it all, and even more difficult to pinpoint a favorite event, moment, or feeling. I'm lucky to live a life packed to the brim with friends, family, snuggles from my cats (Sharkbait, and Meatball), Ruben's amazing cooking, taco perfection (I really like tacos - and the perfect ones are entirely thanks to Ruben :), music, rainbow colors galore, and countless other small pleasures, but there is one place/event/tradition that I think about and long for all year long - a week with my family at the beach.
Maybe it's because we relive these moments ever year at Christmas when I deliver a photo book of the week's events to my brother and sister-in-law, my parents, and my grandma, but it's just my favorite.
A week with my family and best friend relaxing, reading books, digging giant holes in the sand, and cooking the best food ever. It's really hard to beat. :)
This year I tackled my first rolls of film on the beach with my whole family as my test subjects. It was crazy not getting to see a photo right after I took it, and kind of maddening, but when I saw them after they'd been developed - one after another, each one different from the one before, I had an immeasurable appreciation for those moments.
Each photo was imperfect, yet completely perfect at the same time. I didn't take 5 photos of my brother with Gavin trying to capture his perfect little smile - instead, I had one shot, and the expression of the moment. It's amazing how often that single opportunity was my version of perfect - I wouldn't change a thing about 99% of the photos.
These photos mean so much to me. I don't have a picture of every single moment, but I have a beautiful selection of images that tell the story of the week to me each time I view them.
Hope you enjoy. :) Happy 2014!
