I normally don't write very much in my wedding blog posts - I prefer to keep my ramblings to a minimum and let the photos tell the story. HOWEVER - this wedding is different, and I simply must share. Whitney planned every detail of this wedding out to absolute perfection. Unfortunately, like many many many weddings, its perfect execution relied heavily on the weather. Don't get me wrong - there was a back-up plan! But who ever really wants to use their back-up plan? I mean…that's why it's BACK-UP.
Whitney and Ben decided Ash Lawn-Highland, James Monroe's historic home nestled in Charlottesville, VA, was the perfect place to host their friends and family for their wedding. Ash Lawn-Highland is a place of rolling hills, colonial architecture, and one AMAZING driveway lined with humongous old trees. Whitney and I chatted for months about all of the amazing photo opportunities we'd have…unless of course it rained. We were CONVINCED it wouldn't rain, because it barely rained AT ALL in August…but on August 25th, 2012, it not only rained. It POURED. All. Day. Long.
We were all forced to throw the months of meticulous planning and logistics out the window. It was crazy and - I'll admit - a tiny bit stressful, but it was also the most FUN I've ever had at a wedding. Seriously.
Not a thing in the world could have brought Whitney & Ben's spirit down. It also helped that they had selected an incredible team of vendors, all of whom were ready and willing to go above and beyond to make sure the day was as perfect as if the weather hadn't decided to make its diva-like appearance known.
This will go down in my books as one of the most challenging and rewarding weddings I've photographed to date. You can see for yourself, but I think the photos prove that the day was just as, if not more, magical, beautiful, and full of happiness as it could have been with blue skies as our backdrop.
Congratulation Whitney & Ben!! I am beyond honored that I was lucky enough to spend your wedding day with you both. And also...GO HOKIES!!!!!
Whitney's dress next to her mom's wedding dress. :) (The few photos I managed to get outside before the bottom dropped out!)
Exchanging notes before their first look!!
This amazing wreath was originally going to hang on a magnificent oak tree on the lawn during the ceremony, but it looked just as amazing against this rugged stone wall. :)
When the rain was finally slowing to a drizzle, we ventured out and captured these. You never wish for rain, but if it comes anyway, you might as well play in it. :)
Thank you to all of the talented vendors who made this day so incredible!!
